Little Wandle Phonics
At Belmore our children learn to read using a systematic synthetic phonics scheme called Little Wandle Letters and Sounds.
The programme is structured so that younger pupils develop speaking and listening skills, then move on to learning individual sounds. Pupils also learn to blend these sounds together to read words which increase in difficulty e.g sat, sock, shell, banana. Pupils use this knowledge to read phonically decodable books and spell unfamiliar and tricky words.
Children read three times a week in school with an adult developing their decoding skills, reading with fluency and reading for comprehension. We want children to quickly gain the sounds and skills they need so they can read and write with confidence.
The scheme is taught with fidelity, which means that the children experience the same level of high-quality phonics teaching in every class across the school. We aim for all children to be able to use sounds to read and write confidently in year 1 and more fluently by year 2. For children who find reading and writing a challenge we provide pupils with a comprehensive program of targeted support sessions, the result of this is that children are able to use their phonics as tool to improve their reading and writing, opening doors to their learning in the future.
